Within the Sintra Mountains of Portugal, above the town of Sintra, stands the World Heritage Site, Pena Palace. On a clear day, the palace can be easily seen from Portugal's capital city, Lisbon.

The castle's history started in the Middle Ages when a chapel dedicated to "Our Lady of Pena" was built on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra. In the 19th century, King Ferdinand II commissioned the expansion of the small chapel and, stone by stone, what was once a small chapel, became the large and colourful landmark atop the hill for all to see. Pena Palace was built over the next 12 years and required skilled workers with a clear vision for the end product. The palace reflects a combination of Oriental, Islamic, French and Italian architecture. Throughout the centuries, the chapel and subsequent palace and its grounds were severely damaged and abandoned, but never forgotten by its people.
